1. The Latin botanical name is listed. A genuine essential oil is extracted from one specific plant species, and the label should name it. If a label doesn't name the method, that's worth asking about. Solvent extraction produces absolutes and concretes, which are genuine aromatic products but technically not essential oils — and some "vanilla essential oils" on the market fall into this category without being labelled as such.
3. "100% pure" is backed by a GC/MS report. "100% pure" is a label claim, not a verified fact. The way to check it is GC/MS testing — gas chromatography / mass spectrometry — which separates and identifies the individual chemical compounds in a sample. A reputable seller should be able to produce a batch-specific report on request, or publish one on their website. If a brand claims purity but can't produce a GC/MS report, the claim is unverified. 5. The country of origin and plant part are named. A label that reads "lavender flowers, steam-distilled, Bulgaria" gives you traceability. That matters because the same plant species grown in different regions can produce oils with meaningfully different chemical profiles — different soil, climate, and altitude all affect the volatile compounds the plant produces. Naming the plant part (flowers, peel, leaves, wood, roots) matters for the same reason. "Lavender essential oil" with no further detail could be anything.
6. The price reflects plant yield. This is the test most buyers skip, and it catches more fakes than any label check. It takes roughly 150 pounds of lavender flowers to produce one pound of lavender essential oil. Rose requires substantially more — somewhere in the range of 10,000 pounds of petals per pound of oil. Sweet orange, by contrast, is cold-pressed from peel that's already a byproduct of the juice industry, so it's genuinely affordable without sacrificing purity. 7. There are no inflated therapeutic claims. If a label promises to "cure," "treat," "heal," or "prevent" a medical condition, walk away. According to the FDA, products marketed with disease-treatment claims are classified as unapproved drugs, regardless of what's in them. A reputable essential oil seller stays within cosmetic and aromatherapy language. Inflated claims are both a regulatory red flag and a quality signal — a brand willing to exaggerate on the label may be willing to cut corners in the bottle.
"Therapeutic grade" and other terms that mean nothing
"Therapeutic grade" is not recognized by the FDA, ISO, or any independent regulatory body. No organization grants it, tests for it, or polices its use. It was popularized by multi-level marketing essential oil companies as a proprietary differentiator — a term that sounds official precisely because it isn't. Any brand can print "therapeutic grade" on any bottle, including one filled with synthetic fragrance.

Unless backed by a specific, named, independent standard — a particular ISO standard, a pharmacopeia monograph, a third-party certification — treat all of these as marketing copy. Why adulteration is a real problem (not a brand scare tactic)
It's tempting to assume that adulteration is something fringe brands do, and that any oil from a recognizable company is fine. The evidence says otherwise.

What GC/MS testing actually tells you (and what it doesn't)
GC/MS is the standard analytical method for essential oil quality control. - Whether it's the right oil for you. GC/MS confirms what's in the bottle, not whether that oil suits your skin type or mood goal.
GC/MS is necessary but not sufficient. It's the floor — proof the oil is what the label claims — not the ceiling of quality.
How to store essential oils to preserve quality
Quality at purchase only holds if you store the oil correctly. These are the basics:
- Dark glass, cool dark place, tightly sealed. Heat, light, and oxygen are the three things that degrade essential oils. A closed cabinet away from the stove is better than a sunny windowsill.
- Citrus oils oxidize fastest. Lemon, sweet orange, bergamot, and grapefruit typically last 12 to 18 months before their chemistry starts to shift. Keep them refrigerated to extend shelf life.
- Woodier oils last longer. Sandalwood, patchouli, vetiver, and frankincense can hold their quality for several years when stored properly.
